Mental dependence refers to a situation when the use of a drug is a response to a certain event or feeling. Technically, these events are called triggers. When a patient with mental dependence is subjected to a trigger, biochemical changes occur in their brain, which prompts their desire for a particular drug at that time and addictive behavior. Any particular action or thing could trigger the desire for a drug in a mentally dependent patient, such as driving, certain places or events their brain links with the substance, or seeing some people. When exposed to triggers, mentally dependent patients can also experience anxiety or nervousness. Alone, mental dependence is not enough to cause addiction, but it results in addiction when combined with physical dependence. Addiction is the combination of physical and mental dependence symptoms and being able to resist the urge to obtain and use a substance. Physical dependence occurs when a person develops tolerance and withdrawal symptoms.
